Intercountry Adoption
|
Australia recognises the importance of intercountry adoption to family creation and is a party to the Hague Convention on Protection of Children and Co-operation in respect of Intercountry Adoption.
The Australian Government Attorney-General's Department has primary responsibility for developing and maintaining intercountry adoption arrangements with other countries. This responsibility is shared with the State and Territory authorities.
Australia is committed to ensuring that our intercountry adoption practices comply with the principles of the Hague Convention on Intercountry Adoption to ensure that the best interests of children needing adoptive families are met.
The Department is not involved in the processing of individual adoption applications. This is the responsibility of the State and Territory authorities.
