Don Mirra: Haiti

Tuesday, January 12, 2010 at 21:53:10, Port -Au-Prince, Haiti was hit by a magnitude 7.0 earthquake. The Death toll would claim over 250,000 lives. Two and a half years prior to this tragedy, photographer and activist Don Mirra was in Haiti documenting the lives of the Haitian people through the lens of a camera.
This book records the day to day existence of the Haitian people, whose plight was rarely seen prior to the havoc wreaked on the country by the January 12th earthquake. Can we really continue to ignore the conditions under which the Haitian people were subsisting after the media buzz has died down and the news crews have left the country? This book acts as a reminder that to do so is to sentence the Haitian community to further suffering; we must continue Haiti relief and awareness.

We Believe:
"What we see changes what we know.
What we know changes what we see."
-Jean Paiget

Why:
This book is a testament to the persistence and resilience of Haiti. These 200 pages offer a glimpse of Haiti and its people without the spin of the media. This is the world as it was and continues to be. Many of the places that were photographed in downtown Port au Prince are no longer there. This book has been called a treasure by the Haitian people.

How the book was created:
The creation of this book was riddled with obstacles. The harsh climate, living conditions, and safety were always at issue. As an artist, it was a daily challenge to create the images you will see. Overcoming my status as an outsider before the media hype of the earthquake was essential to my success.
